Vinton Farmers Market season to begin Thursday, June 7

  The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department will be kicking off another Farmers market season on Thursday, June 7th.  The market will once again be at the Vinton Rail Road Depot from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. every Thursday through September 27h. On June 7th patrons will be treated to the great sounds of the Schmidt Family Band.

Medallion Hunt begins; first clues to be offered June 6

  The VintonParksand Recreation Department will be starting the Medallion Hunt, once again for the 21st Anniversary of Party in the Park.  The Medallion Hunt will begin June 6, 2012and end June 20, 2012.   There will only be 8 Medallions hidden this year, so we are limiting it to one per household.  Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Cooling Dancers to Perform Spring Recital June 2-3

 Cooling Dance Center will present its annual spring recital Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3, at the VSHS Auditorium.  Several hundred students representing school districts from Vinton-Shellsburg, Center Point-Urbana, Benton, Union, Independence, Prairie, Cedar Rapids, and North Tama will come together to celebrate their dance education for the annual event.

Teddi Newton to celebrate retirement from Regions Thursday

After 28 years and more than four months, Teddi Newton will retire on Thursday from Regions Bank. There will be an open house during business hours (beginning at 9 a.m.) on Thursday, May 31. Everyone is welcome to stop by and congratulate Teddi and wish her well.

Breast Cancer Survivors to meet June 5

'Dream Big:' Summer Reading Progam begins at Vinton library

Ronald McDonald is coming to Vinton. The garbage lady too. Animals from Blank Park Zoo, as well. And magic. And balloons. And even polka. Each year, more than 400 students sign up for the Vinton Public Library summer reading program for those age 2-14. The program offers prizes for those who read during the summer. It also includes story time each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and special events through June and July.

RAGBRAI: Coming to Vinton; not just through our town

Vinton is preparing for RAGBRAI (July 28, when the riders come through Vinton during the middle of the day; see an earlier story HERE) On the surface, you may not have noticed much, but the evidence is starting to pop up throughout town….the streets along the route are being treated, clean up is being done, groups are meeting, churches are meeting, and teams are planning….

New Viking football coach to speak to parents, community tonight

  Parents and community members are invited to meet new Viking head football coach Jim Womochil tonight, Monday, May 21. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium. Coach Womochil will be discussing his football background, expectations, philosophies, and plans for Viking football. This will be a great opportunity to meet the new football coach and offer your support.

River RATS continue to plan for Aug. 11 clean-up

River RATS hope to clean up messes like this Aug. 11 along the Cedar River.   In just under 3 months, the Cedar River will be host to an assortment of organized volunteers that will gather for the 5th annual Cedar River clean up project. The 2012 clean up will begin at Mt. Auburn, the northernmost boat ramp in Benton County. The group will float to a pre-determined spot for lunch (provided by the Committee), and to offload any refuse that has been collected along the way.

Buchanan Co. pasture walk to focus on watering system

   Pasture improvement and rotational grazing are key topics for many beef and dairy producers, but one of the big challenges becomes subdivision, fencing, and watering systems.  These topics will be discussed at a pasture walk at the farm of Tom & Connie Soppe on Wednesday, June 6, at 6:00 pm.    The Soppes have established an intensive rotational grazing system for beef cows in northwest Buchanan County.
